Following the publication of the positive results of the clinical trials in the medical journal The Lancet, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, assured that they will apply the vaccine Sputnik V against the Corona virus, if the regulatory body approves it.

“Anyone who obtains an authorization from the EMA (European Medicines Agency) will be welcome. I spoke with the Russian President (Vladimir Putin) precisely about this, ”Merkel said in a TV interview, praising the“ good ”scientific data published on the drug.

In January, the Chancellor declared her willingness to help Russia develop Sputnik V against Covid-19 in Germany. “Beyond all our political differences, which are currently important, we can work together in the context of a pandemic, in a humanitarian field,” he explained at a press conference.

The Russian authorities have started the process of homologation in the European Union (EU) of Sputnik V and they await a first review of the documents sent.

In this context, Merkel proposed that the German Federal Institute Paul-Ehrlich, in charge of pharmaceutical regulation, “support Russia” in the face of the European Medicines Agency.

“And, if this vaccine is approved by the EMA, then we can talk about co-production and also about its use”, declared the European leader at the time.

The Sputnik V vaccine has an efficiency of 91.6%, according to the analysis of clinical trials published this Tuesday by the prestigious British medical journal and validated by independent experts.

This “means that an additional vaccine can join the fight to reduce the incidence of Covid-19”, the researchers warned.

Merkel also gave indications that the drug developed by China would be approved, noting that a country like Serbia “vaccinates faster” than the rest of Europe with the Asian giant’s vaccine, called Sinovac.

The chancellor’s statements are part of the strong criticism that the German government is receiving for the delay in the vaccination campaign, compared to other countries such as the United Kingdom or the United States.
