Four skiers died and four others were injured in an avalanche in a canyon in the state of Utah, western United Stateslocal authorities and media reported on Saturday.

The Utah Avalanche Center, which documents landslides in the region, said it was the highest death toll from the cause since 1992.

“We are shocked to report that four skiers were killed today in an avalanche near Wilson Peak at the top of Millcreek Canyon”, the institution tweeted.

The local television channel KSTU reported that police received the first call for help around 11 a.m. The other four skiers were also trapped in the avalanche, but escaped and were rescued, the channel said.
