Four skiers died and four others were injured in an avalanche in a canyon in the state of Utah, western United Stateslocal authorities and media reported on Saturday.

The Utah Avalanche Center, which documents landslides in the region, said it was the highest death toll from the cause since 1992.

“We are shocked to report that four skiers were killed today in an avalanche near Wilson Peak at the top of Millcreek Canyon”, the institution tweeted.

The local television channel KSTU reported that police received the first call for help around 11 a.m. The other four skiers were also trapped in the avalanche, but escaped and were rescued, the channel said.

His state of health was not reported. “This is a terrible tragedy and our prayers are with the victims and families involved,” Utah Gov. Spencer Cox tweeted. “We are grateful to the first responders and others who participated in this rescue and recovery effort. Since the avalanche danger is high at this time, please be extra careful,” he added.

Avalanches are a serious danger in the mountains of Utah from January to April. Earlier before the accident, the avalanche center had warned of “dangerous avalanche conditions”.
