British scientists have detected 76 cases of infection with two new variants of the coronavirus, Sky News reports.
The Advisory Group on New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats has called one of the new strains of SARS-CoV-2 a “variant of concern.” It is the Kentish strain, which has undergone the E484K mutation. To date, 14 cases of this viral variant have been reported in Brstol, 4 in Manchester and 3 in other parts of Britain.
In addition, another strain of the virus has been registered in Liverpool and designated as a “variant under investigation”. Experts have detected 55 cases of infection with this variant, which also shows traces of the E484K mutation, says Independent.
According to experts, the Brstol variant can be very contagious, although it may interfere with the vaccine. However, specialists argue that the vaccine should ensure people are protected from the serious illnesses that the strain can cause. Additionally, they said they had “a high degree of confidence that the vaccines will work against the variants.”
For the time being, There are 4 variants of the coronavirus classified as “ worrying ” by the British authorities: the Kent strain, its new mutation and the strains from South Africa and Brazil.
