US urged Iranian regime to ‘roll back’ on decision to limit nuclear inspections

The United States on Wednesday called on the Iranian regime to “go back” on the decision to limit nuclear inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from February 23, after reminding him that “all these steps are reversible and that the diplomatic channel remains open.”

State Department spokesman Ned Price insisted that Tehran should “refrain from continuing on this path, which will have an impact on IAEA safeguards, which not only states trust. -United, not our allies and partners in the region, but the whole world ”.

In addition, he stressed that “Iran must cooperate fully and in a timely manner with the IAEA” and He reiterated that if Tehran resumed full compliance with the agreement, Washington would do the same.

Price added that the 2015 agreement “is a floor, not a ceiling” and that his strategy is to “lengthen and strengthen it”.

“The way to diplomacy remains open. We look forward to following it with our allies and partners, ”said Price.

That same Wednesday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stressed that the country “had heard many fine words and promises which were violated and which were not backed up by actions”. “This time, we are only taking action,” he added, adding that “if we see action on the other side (referring to the United States), we will also act.”

The Iranian regime announced on Monday the suspension of nuclear inspections provided for in the additional protocol to the comprehensive joint action plan (PIAC) to February 23.

Thus, IAEA inspections in Iran will be limited to those provided for in the Safeguard Agreement also included in the PIAC.

Iran and six international powers (Russia, United States, United Kingdom, China, France and Germany) signed PIAC in July 2015, by which Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program and certify its peaceful objectives in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

However, in May 2018, Washington broke pact and activated sanctions against Iran as country continued to develop nuclear weapons. A year later, Iran began to gradually reduce compliance with its nuclear commitments due to the lack of progress with the rest of the countries to counter North American restrictions.

The eventual return of the United States to the nuclear deal after Joe Biden’s victory in the North American presidential election has given new importance to this pact. Tehran has defended at all times that withdrawing its commitments on several points of the nuclear deal can be reversed if the United States withdraws the sanctions and returns to the deal.
