Former Buenos Aires Governor Mara Eugenia Vidal has been appointed Observer of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the legislative elections to be held in El Salvador on Sunday February 28.

The OAS said in a statement that, by decision of the secretary general of the body, Luis Almagro, the former provincial president will be the head of the Election Observation Mission (EOM), a delegation of 20 people who will attend the elections in the Central American country.

In these elections, El Salvador elects the 84 legislators of the Congress, the 262 mayors of the country and the deputies of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen).

In December 2020, the former secretary of strategic affairs of macrismo Fulvio Pompeo was appointed by Almagro to head an OAS mission in Guatemala.

Almagro has been the axis of criticism in the region for the organization’s role in the crisis in Bolivia: the president of the Parliament of Mercosur, Oscar Laborde, announced in December that he would open an investigation against the secretary general of the ‘OEA for its complaint of alleged electoral fraud in that country’s presidential elections in October 2019, which culminated in the coup against the government of then-President Evo Morales.

In this regard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Felipe Sol warned during a general assembly held the same month that the OAS “must be the confinement, the mediation and above all the guarantor of the pacification of our America. Never judge or gendarme when they end up fueling the problem they should help solve, ”referring to the institutional coup in Bolivia.

The OAS Secretary General has indicated that this is the “sixteenth” observation mission that the OAS will send to El Salvador.

“These data reflect, on the one hand, El Salvador’s desire to have better elections and, on the other hand, our commitment to strengthen democratic institutions in the country and in the Americas,” he said. declared.

A few weeks after election day, the EOM, led by Vidal, will present a final report to the OAS Permanent Council.
