They discover an impressive butterfly the size of an adult hand

Pam Taylor, a woman from Brisbane, northeast of Australia, discovered a giant hand-sized butterfly perched on a tree branch, and quickly photographed her to share her find on an entomology Facebook group.

The huge butterfly gray with black spots on the wings was found at Camp Mountain, a rural town in the state of Queensland.

One of the members of this group replied that the specimen belonged to the family Cossidae, also known as “Night butterflies”.

“They are known as Witchetty larvae, goat moths, carpenter moths, wood moths or borers,” added another woman named Jackie Beer.

The issue was resolved when another user agreed that it was a giant moth, whose scientific name is Endoxyla cinereus. This species of moth is commonly found in Australia, near coastal areas. From one wing to the other, they measure about 23 centimeters and are born in the plants of Eucalyptus.

The morning after the discovery, Taylor returned to the scene to see if the butterfly he had survived the storm that had occurred the night before. To his surprise, he found her accompanied by another giant butterfly.
