A guard at Cabrceno Natural Park (Cantabria, Spain) has died after being hit by the trunk of a four-ton elephant, the zoo and regional authorities have reported.

The man was knocked down by the trunk of the pachyderm, who at that time was with his calf in one of the patios, and when he fell he hit his head against the bars of the enclosure .
The worker was taken by ambulance to Marqus de Valdecilla University Hospital, located in the nearby town of Santander, where he died three hours later due to the severity of his injuries.
“We are talking about unpredictable animals that weigh between 4,000 and 6,000 kilograms in large males,” said Javier Lpez Marcano, Minister of Industry, Tourism, Innovation, Transport and Trade in the Government of Cantabria in a press release. “This is a huge attack, on a scale that we can escape,” he added.
Additionally, he pointed out that the elephant that caused the death of the worker has an infection in his leg and is believed to be pregnant, pointing out that the zoo will not take any action against the animal.
