Rooster Kills Owner With Knife In Illegal Fight

In India, a rooster that was used for fighting and had a blade attached to its leg, killed its owner while trying to escape. This led to a police chase with the organizers of the illegal event that took place in Lothunur town, Telangana state.

The bird provoked him serious injuries to man in the crotch, which caused bleeding which could not be treated in time resulting in the death of the person. The animal was sent by authorities to a poultry farm, while police are looking for 15 people involved in the activity. The promoters could face charges of homicide, illegal gambling and organization of illegal events.

Although banned since 1960, cockfighting remains common in rural areas of several states in India, particularly during the Hindu festival of Makar Sankranti.

Roosters, bred especially for this purpose, are generally provided with 7.5cm long blades that tie at your legs to face your opponents. Despite the efforts of police and animal rights activists, thousands of roosters are killed each year in these illegal fights.

“The penalties for illegal animal fighting are very clear to the people and the authorities, but they choose to turn a blind eye because it is not just about entertainment, but about strong bets made by participants“, Explained to AFP Gauri Maulekhi, member of the foundation People for animals of India, who stressed that the inaction of the authorities contributed to the continuation of these illegal practices.
