They protest against Mexican airline for failing to hire young man with HIV

A young man denounced the Mexican airline Volaris for discrimination and claims compensation for damage after the company refused to hire him for HIV, as explained on Monday Armando Uri during a demonstration in Mexico City.

“Imagine being a person who prepared with great effort for Volaris to come and tell you that they cannot hire you because you have HIV and also cruelly because it invades your privacy.Uri, 31, told the EFE agency.

The young man says that in 2017 he went to a recruitment that offered Volaris for the post of commissioner of aviation, he therefore had to undergo the tests requested by the company as part of the process.

These tests, he said, included blood tests. However, they never specified that he would be tested for HIV and syphilis.

“Two weeks later, Volaris sent me an email confirming my approach“, he claimed.

Armando explained that he felt discriminated against because they hired nine other people who applied in the same process as him. “The only one they don’t hire is me, when I had passed all the filters and was the best average of my generation“, a point.

Consulted by Efe. the airline referred to a statement released in January in which the company dismissed Armando Uri’s complaint.

In said document, Volaris stipulate that “the reasons why his hiring was not specified lie in others that are very different from those he provides, mainly related to the professional technical aspects of the position and the position to which he aspired.

However, Jessica Gonzáles Hermosillo, Uri’s lawyer, said the reason Volaris gave for not hiring Armando was that “I didn’t have any ID, which is totally wrong“.

For this reason, in 2019 Armando decided to approach the Mexico City Council for the Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination (Copred) which conducted an investigation in which Armando learned that he had been tested for HIV and syphilis in Volaris.

In October of the same year, Copred issued a resolution in which it determined that there was discrimination on the part of the company.

“Months later, I decide to sue them for moral damages because there is a violation of my privacy and my rightsUri pointed out.

Armando has denounced that Volaris is currently evading a court ruling imposed by a judge to register the lawsuit on the Mexican Stock Exchange as a relevant event.

“And they delayed it, on top of my access to quick and swift justice“, He said.

He stressed that his case should be used to prevent this type of abuse from being committed against people with different sexual preferences, who suffer from a disease such as HIV or who are pregnant.

Alaín Pinzón, director of the organization HIVve Libre, which supports people living with HIV, pointed out that these types of cases are very common in Mexico.
