Two men carry a painting with gloves in their hands. In this one, you can see a landscape in yellow and blue tones with sunlight hitting from one corner. It is “Tour of the Koutoubia Mosque” by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, which was recently sold by 11.5 million for its former owner, Angelina Jolie.

This work It was presented to the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. The Englishman painted it while in Marrakech, Morocco, after attending a meeting with the White House that took place in January 1943.

“Churchill first visited Morocco in 1935, where he fell in love with the quality of light,” Nick Orchard, director of modern British art at Christie’s in London, told CNN.

In 2011, the piece was acquired by actor Brad Pitt as a gift for Angelina Jolie, who has now made the decision to auction it off. The coin’s price has tripled and far exceeded the estimate which had $ 3.5 million. The painting’s strongest auction was hosted by Sotheby’s London in 2014, when it sold for $ 2.7 million.

Bill Rau, an antique dealer, told US media that Pitt bought the painting from his store. However, the work came a long way before it reached the hands of the former Hollywood couple.

The “Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque” is the only painting produced between 1939 and 1945, but its origin goes back to January 1943, when, after a meeting in Morocco where a strategy against Nazi Germany was discussed, Churchill and Roosevelt together watched a sunset.

The former prime minister premiered the play a day after Roosevelt left the stage, and both later demanded “unconditional redemption from his enemies.”

After this episodeThe painting ended up in New Orleans, said the antique dealer, where a family kept it for more than five decades before contacting his gallery. “The painting represents the moment that the two world leaders shared seeing the majestic landscape of Marrakech as the sun set over the Atlas Mountains, and knowing that Churchill offered the painting to FDR after their time together. made him even more excited. The “Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque” It is considered “Sir Winston Churchil’s most important painting” due to its “interrelation with the history of the 20th century”, British art historian Barry Phipps claims in the auction catalog.

To date, Churchill’s art market has been prolific, for apart from the “Tower of Wickedness in Koutobia”, two more of his works were sold for a higher price than expected in a night sale at Christie’s “Modern British Art”.

Over the course of his life, Churchill produced more than 500 works. He began painting at the age of 40, after losing the title of First Lorde of the Admiralty to a failed naval attack during World War I.
