Charged: European country with the highest death rate in the world

PARIS.- The new coronavirus pandemic has already caused at least 2,579,178 deaths worldwide since the World Health Organization (WHO) reported the onset of the disease in China in December 2019, according to a report compiled by worldometer.info from official sources. And the country with the highest proportional number of deaths is currently Czech Republic, with 1970 deaths per million population, followed by five other European countries, Belgium (1907), Slovenia (1865), United Kingdom (1821), Montenegro (1654), e Italy (1639). The first Latin American country on this list is Mexico (1448 deaths per million inhabitants), in 15th place. The Argentina (1153) is ranked 27th out of over 200 countries.

Hospitals in the Czech Republic are already racking up unprecedented numbers of Covid-19 patients throughout pandemic, resulting in rebound in infections which has pushed the country to daily data on cases it had not recorded since early January. Health authorities yesterday reported 16,642 new cases, while the total number of positives is already close to 1.3 million. The seven-day incidence rate climbed above 780 positives per 100,000 population. At least 20,941 people have died since the start of the pandemic, while 8,162 patients are hospitalized, according to data from the Czech Ministry of Health.

Among the patients admitted, 1660 correspond to patients requiring assisted breathing. Hospital pressure has reached such a point in the Pardubice region of Bohemia that the authorities they activated an emergency plan.

Since the start of the epidemic, more than 116,152,786 people have contracted the disease. The vast majority of patients recover, but a still poorly evaluated part maintains symptoms for weeks or even months.

The figures are based on the reports communicated daily by the health authorities of each country and exclude the corrections made a posteriori by the various agencies, as in Russia, Spain or United Kingdom.

Since the start of the pandemic, the number of tests performed has increased dramatically and tracking techniques have improved, leading to an increase in reported infections. However, the number of cases diagnosed only reflects a portion of all infections, less severe or asymptomatic cases remain undetected.

Regarding the progress of the vaccination program, according to the ourworldindata.org site, more than 257 million people have already been vaccinated worldwide, taken in absolute numbers by the United States, with 80 million people vaccinated.
