Citing studies widely spread around the world, Maduro, who Russia to one of its main allies, with China, Cuba and Turkey, stressed that Sputnik V “is a potent vaccine to generate immunity.”

The Minister of Health, Carlos alvarado, with the Russian Ambassador in Caracas, Sergey Mélik-Bagdasárov, and the Venezuelan Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jorge Arreaza, celebrated the arrival of the plane from Maiquetía International Airport, which serves Caracas.

“We already know that President Nicolás Maduro has been vaccinated, it is a great honor for us,” he said. Melik-Bagdasárov, ensuring that “more and more vaccines will come ”to Venezuela, as agreed between the presidents of the two countries.

On February 18, Venezuela began delivering the first dose of the Russian COVID-19 Sputnik V vaccine to healthcare workers, after receiving 100,000 of the 10 million doses ordered.

“Monday vaccination starts with the Chinese vaccine, there are 500,000 doses that have reached the country for 250,000 people (…) there are 100,000 teachers who are going to be vaccinated and 50,000 people who are in the door-to-door surveys, which is the new phase with the Chinese vaccine, ”Alvarado said.

Since March 2020, when the first cases of covid-19 were detected in Venezuela, face-to-face classes have been suspended. Maduro said he plans to return to school next April.

Alvarado pointed out that “there are already 700,000 doses” of vaccines in the Caribbean country. “500,000 from the Chinese vaccine and 200,000 from the Russian vaccine, and so they will continue to meet the goal that we must achieve this year of vaccinating 70 percent of the Venezuelan population.”

The batch of Sputnik V received this Saturday “is the second dose from this group of people who are on the front lines of the fight against covid,” Alvarado said with reference to medical staff.

Venezuela also has between 1.4 and 2.4 million AstraZeneca vaccines booked through the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Covax system. However, they could not arrive due to debts with the WHO.
