Shocking images of a ship “floating” in the air – News

Although it was quickly referred to by users as a “ghost ship,” it is observed a rare climatic phenomenon which produces mirages and which is called “Morgana girl “.

In the photos you can clearly see a boat, but instead of being on the water it appears to be floating.

Meteorologist David Braine of the BBC, explained that it is in fact “A superior mirage” which occurs due to special atmospheric conditions which deflect the light and make the ship appear to be floating in the air and not in the sea.

This phenomenon is very common in the Arctic, where a climatic condition known as temperature inversion occurs, in which cold air is near the sea, with warmer air above it.

The optical effect is known as Morgana girl, Consists of regular separation between warm and cold (denser) air near the earth’s surface and can act as a refractory lens, producing an inverted image, above which the distant object appears to be floating.

Although this can happen in winter in the UK, the expert assured that it is not something common, but this time it happened because “the cold air is denser than hot air, it deflects the light towards the eyes of someone standing on the ground or on the shore, changing the appearance of a distant object ”.

“Higher mirages can produce different types of images. In this case, a distant vessel appears to be floating well above its actual position, but sometimes an object below the horizon can become visible, ”said Braine.
