This March 8, the case of a man who had murdered his wife by injecting her with a toxic substance – not yet identified – was known. who took his life in a few minutes. The aberrant event occurred in Montería, Córdoba.

The woman has been identified as Yoelis Herrera Ortega, 32, and the perpetrator – who is wanted by authorities – is Manuel Morelo, a day laborer from the region, with whom the victim had lived for several months, according to El Heraldo.

According to the newspaper, the attack took place on Sunday March 7 at 10 p.m. inside a house on the way to Patagonia, rural area of ​​Tierralta.

The neighbors’ versions indicate that the abuser used a syringe to administer a poisonous substance intravenously to the woman, which caused her death within minutes.

In addition, they ensure that the woman had decided not to continue her relationship with Morelo, who after learning began a fight that led to the murder.

Witnesses say the woman tried to remove the needle, which had apparently been injected with insecticide, but managed to hit the young woman in the abdomen. After the injection, the woman began to convulse and died.

Neighbors arrived at the scene of the alleged murder and found the woman’s body lying on the ground. It was the woman’s daughter, a seven-year-old girl, who told the residents of the nearest plot about what her stepfather was doing. The attacker is wanted by the Tierralta police units.

The Office of the Attorney General of the Nation submitted, on March 8, a report in which it confirms that between January 1 and February 28, 2021, 37 femicides were registered in Colombia, these figures would indicate, according to the entity, As for the murders of women recorded in 2020, the figure has increased by 8.8%.

Juliana Bazzani, counselor to the prosecution, denounced that, contrary to the observation of a decrease in cases and complaints, what is happening is that violence has increased in recent months and more since the start of the pandemic.

“Unfortunately, in femicide cases, there has been an increase, registering 37 victims in the entity as of February 28, which represents an increase of 8.8%, that is, there is three more victims compared to the same date last year.Bazzani explained to RCN Radio.

The entity also assured that Valle del Cauca, Antioquia, Bogotá, Santander, Atlántico and Bolívar were the departments with the most cases of femicides in the last five years, places in which the authorities have implemented initiatives to protect the rights of women who are victims of some type of violence.

One of the issues that has increased the most over the months, according to the accusing body’s report, is domestic violence, the second most reported crime by women nationwide; In 2019, 88,041 cases of assault on women by their partner or a family member were reported, while in 2020, another 8,000 cases were known, for a total of 96,010 complaints.

In the first months of 2021 the alarms went off as complaints became more constant; From January to February, the prosecution received 14,711 people for domestic violence.

On the other side, there are cases of sexual violence. Most of these cases were reported by women, with a total of 3,877 cases reported in 2021; in recent years, they were 30,579 in 2020 and 38,697. The regions where the most cases of sexual violence have occurred are Bogotá, Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Cundinarmaca and Santander.

In the same figures sent by the prosecution, they ensure that, of the 178 cases reported in 2020, 94.38% have already been resolved. “Despite recent events, the clarification is at 78% compared to the 37 cases reported in 2021”, Bazzani has come forward.
