March 8: strong mobilization at the Congress and at the Obelisk

In the International Women’s Day, and as part of the so-called 8M, some 40 thousand people took part in a march to Congress at the request of the growth of femicides, gender-based violence, the slowness of justice to protect women who denounce their attackers, as well as the precariousness of employment, which has worsened with the pandemic. In the absence of agreement between the different groups, a common document was not read.

In the first two months of the year alone, 50 femicides were committed; the first records this year coincide with figures in previous reports, which say a woman is murdered every 29 hours.

There are several cities in the country where women’s mobilizations are taking place. In the capital of Cordoba, different groups organized marches with strong demands for the National Congress to debate and discuss an emergency national bill on gender-based violence.

Meanwhile, in La Plata, women, transvestites and transvestites from this city, Berisso and Ensenada today marched through the center of the capital city of Buenos Aires to demand justice with a gender perspective and measures effective protection in situations of violence that denounce their attackers.

The mobilization was called by the Multisectoral of Mujeres, Lesbianas, Trans y Travestis de La Plata, Berisso and Ensenada, which met at 4.30 p.m. in front of the Cathedral of La Plata, as a symbol of the patriarchate that for centuries regulated the women’s bodies, women’s bodies, the organizers explained.

The steps are reproduced in Tierra del Fuego and in other provinces of the country.

In the city of Santa Fe, for example, more than 3,500 women marched from the Costanera area to the government house, which has been one of the most followed protests since this claim was made. One of the main demands of feminist movements was the sanction of the emergency law on gender-based violence.

In Rosario, there were over 5,000 women marching to make International Women’s Day visible, with a strong call against gender-based violence. Protesters concentrated in Plaza San Martín, then proceeded to the National Flag Monument, where a proclamation was read.

There were also mobilizations in the main towns of the provincial interior. In Reconquista, it was stressed that women in the region need “concrete proposals to integrate the gender perspective”.
