Alberto Fernández spoke with Lula about the quashing of his convictions and considered that the sentence “admits the right”

Alberto Fernández received with personal joy the judgment of the Supreme Court of Brazil which quashed the convictions against Lula da Silva and assessed in his office at Casa Rosada that this is the first sentence that admits, in his opinion, the application of Lawfare against Latin American political leaders facing the establishment of their own country.

“I told Lula that I admired him and that I loved him very much, never to doubt his innocence, and that’s why I collaborated for his freedom”, revealed the president to Infobae when he asked if he had spoken to the former head of state of Brazil.

-Did the decision of the Supreme Court of Brazil put the concept of Lawfare in check?

-That doesn’t defeat him. Approve of its existence. This is an admission by the Lawfare. That’s it.

Alberto Fernández was in his office in Balcarce 50 when the conviction of Edson Fachin, judge at the Supreme Court of Brazil, became known. This sentence annulled all the convictions at first instance related to Operation Lava Jato.

Fachin’s ruling refers to three processes in which Lula was tried by the Curitiba Magistrates’ Court, headed by then-judge Sergio Moro, and said the tribunal did not have “legal jurisdiction.” required to analyze them at the time. Moro, with the presidential inauguration of Jair Bolsonaro, has become his short-lived Minister of Justice.

Judge Fachin’s measure concerns proceedings relating to a triplex apartment in the spa town of Guarujá, on the coast of the state of Sao Paulo; to a country house in the city of Atibaia in São Paulo, and to an investigation into the Lula Institute, founded by the former president. The president has always viewed Lula as innocent, while his Brazilian counterpart believed the exact opposite. And this political dissonance colored the entire bilateral relationship as well as their differences regarding the role of the Organization of American States (OAS), the geopolitical causes of the exile of Evo Morales and the institutional situation in Venezuela.

With the decision in favor of Lula, Alberto Fernández and Bolsonaro would have one less dissent problem. “I do not know, maybe”, the president responded before that eventuality.

The summit of the two heads of state will take place on March 26 in Buenos Aires. It’s an open agenda, and no one at Casa Rosada and the Planalto Palace doubts that Alberto Fernández and Bolsonaro will discuss Lula’s political and legal situation. A classic between the two leaders who distrust each other.
