The National Drug Board of Uruguay (JND) raised this Thursday $ 490,945 from the auction of four luxury vehicles that belonged to trade unionist Marcelo Balcedo and were seized in 2018 when police raided his El Gran Chaparral farm, in Playa Verde, as part of a cause that was followed by money laundering, trafficking in assets and weapons.

Having admitted his guilt for the crimes of which he was accused and convicted in Uruguay, Balcedo is currently under house arrest in a huge chalet, located near the farm, since February 2021.

The former head of the Union of Workers and Employees of Minorities and Education (SOEME) has “An intensive probation regime” which implies that during the first year, he will be under “total house arrest” and in the other two, he will be obliged to “appear once a week” in a section and will be “forbidden to leave his home at night. », That is to say, the night of house arrest.

In agreement with the Uruguayan prosecutor’s office, Balcedo had to deliver 4,000,000 USD in cash and guarantee the seizures of the villa “Sounión” and high-end cars, which were ultimately auctioned off.

The auction took place at the Radisson Hotel in Montevideo, and among those present was Paola Fiege, Balcedo’s wife, who entered the hall to participate in the auction.

In addition to having benefited from the domiciliation, Balcedo recovered around 2.5 million UDS despite the fact that the federal judge of La Plata Ernest kreplak, had asked Uruguayan judge María Helena Mainard not to accept the return of this money because, according to the investigation he is conducting, it would be the product of corrupt maneuvers carried out in Argentina.

“In view of the direct and negative effects it has on the protective measures adopted in the procedure, I request the issuance of judicial measures aimed at suspending the return measure and lifting the precautionary measures on bank accounts”, indicates the letter sent by Kreplak and warns of this “if appropriate precautionary measures are not taken in a timely manner, the conviction passed in Uruguay would imply that those convicted in that country would recover a substantial part of the money which, according to the hypothesis followed in Argentina, would be the result or the benefit of the previous offenses of money laundering –in particular, fraud by an administration unfaithful to the Union of Workers and Employees of Minorities and Education (“SOEME”) – and, at the same time, an instrument committing the crime of money laundering “.

The federal judge of La Plata, in a case which has already been the subject of an oral trial – no date has yet been set – has already determined that the “illicit association” led by Balcedo had hijacked nearly 600 million pesos corresponding to the contributions of affiliates to SOEME between 2012 and 2018.
