Shocking fire at one of Indonesia’s largest refineries: three are missing

The Indonesian state-owned oil company Pertamina is trying to contain a fire at its refinery in Balongan, in the province of West Java, located about 200 km from the capital, Jakarta. The incident began at 12:45 p.m. local time and The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined, but the company said the blaze started during a severe thunderstorm.

About a thousand residents had to be evacuated and the local disaster management agency reported death by heart attack after an explosion.

Pertamina CEO Nickle Widyawati told a press conference that he was trying to control the fire with 10 fire trucks and reported that five people were being treated in a hospital, while other less injured victims had already returned home. Meanwhile, the search for the three missing persons continues.

Pertamina Company was founded on December 10, 1957 and is a state-owned oil and gas company in Indonesia. The refinery has the capacity to process 125,000 barrels of oil per day, making it the largest in its country. The company also said it does not foresee any interruptions in the supply of hydrocarbons to the Southeast Asian archipelago thanks to a high volume of stocks.
