Doctors Announce World’s First Baby With Three Penises | the Chronicle

Iraqi baby is the first child born with three penises, according to the doctors who treated him in the region of Kurdistan, in the north of Iraq. This is the first documented case of trifalia in humans, according to the newspaper 20 Minutos de Spain and the mirror of United Kingdom.

Only one of the boy’s penises was functional, so the other two, attached to the axis of his main member and to the lower part of his scrotum, were surgically removed. Baby was three months old when his condition was discovered and doctors don’t know why they didn’t notice anything strange when he was born.

The baby’s parents took him to the hospital because of a swollen scrotum. However, once at the center, doctors observed that he had three penises: a two-centimeter member and a one-centimeter member.

Urologists found that none of the extra penises had a urethra, the tube that urine passes through, and decided that surgery was the best option.

“As far as we know, this is the first case reported with three penises or triphalia“wrote the doctor Shakir Saleem Jabali in a case study published in the “International Journal of Surgery Case Reports”.

No problems were found during a follow-up visit one year after the operation, according to Dr Jabali. Scientists are still puzzled as to the cause of the supernumerary penises, the technical name of the additional members, the first of which was reported in the 17th century.

According to the report, one in five to six million children are born with more than one penis, with around 100 cases of difalia (two penises) registered worldwide. But this Iraqi child is the first to have triphalia. Another similar case in India went viral in 2015, but experts couldn’t verify the story because it was never detailed in a medical journal.
