Elections in Peru: one week before the presidential election, the technical link between 6 candidates remains

Two polls published this Sunday, the last ones authorized before elections in peru of April 11, they confirmed that nor there is no clearly preferred candidate to go to the second round, because all have less than 13% of voting intention and the technical link between the main candidates is maintained.

The IPSOS survey, published by Trade, keep the centrist Yonhy lescano (Popular Action) in first place, with 12.1% support, a percentage that increases if only valid votes are counted. In second place, with a growth of nearly seven points from the last study, is the liberal economist Hernando de Soto (Avanza País), with 11.5%, while the left Veronika mendoza (Together for Peru) occupies third place with 10.2%.

A few tenths away, there are two other candidates: the former footballer George Forsyth, with 9.8%, and the preservative Keiko Fujimori, with 9.3%. The distance between first and fifth place is less than three points, while the margin of error is ± 2.5%, so a favorite cannot be declared.

The IPSOS survey was carried out using the simulation modality (with a map and a secret amphora), which reduces the possibility of a “hidden vote”. However, due to the immobility declared by the pandemic during Holy Week, it should have been held on Wednesday 31, when the third and final date of the debates was missing (which had to be divided to include all 18 candidates).

In exchange, IEP consultant’s study (Published by The Republic) was done after the third debate, albeit over the phone, which may be less precise.

In this survey, in the first places, three options appear on the right: Fujimori (9.8%), tied with De Soto (9.8%) and ultra-conservative businessman Rafael López Aliaga (8.4%). Further back, but still within the margin of error, are Lescano (8.2%), Mendoza (7.3%) and leftist Pedro Castillo (6.6%).

In addition to a high number of people who do not plan to vote for anyone (28%), almost half of the respondents (44%) replied that they had not decided to vote or that they could change their decision.

Peru will elect on April 11 the successor of interim president Francisco Sagasti and renew the 130 members of Congress, while the COVID-19 pandemic does not give a truce and this Saturday reached its daily record of deaths (294). Across the country, more than 1.5 million people have been infected, with more than 52,000 deaths, at a high economic cost and driving up insurance prices for individuals and businesses.
