Biden to try to move forward with Supreme Court reform

This group of bipartisan experts analyze the challenges of the debate on a possible reform, such as the duration of the mandate – currently for life -, the number of magistrates, the way in which the institution selects the questions on which it decides and its rules and practices.

“This initiative is part of the administration’s commitment to explore measures to improve federal justice.”the executive said in the statement quoted by the AFP news agency.

The Supreme Court of the United States, one of the most powerful organizations in the country, deals with many issues that govern people’s lives, such as the right to abortion or those of sexual minorities.

It is currently composed of nine judges which are appointed by the president and which must be confirmed by the Senate.

The highest court has six conservative justices, three of whom were appointed by Trump. The last to enter was the curator Amy Coney Barrett, who replaced the progressive Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

During the Democratic primary, several candidates, including the current transport secretary, Pete Buttigieg, they raised the possibility of increasing the number of judges, a proposal which was rejected by the Republicans.
