This is how the body of a relative who died of Covid-19 was stolen from a hospital

A family decided to steal a man’s body and carry him home on a stretcher through the streets of the municipality of Fundación in Magdalena, Colombia. The situation arose after relatives rejected the diagnosis of doctors at the hospital: death from coronavirus.

According to RCN News, Ramón Eliecer Quintero, 59 years old, had suffered for several years from respiratory problems and, after consulting in several health centers in the municipality, ended up in the San Rafael hospital.

There, doctors indicated that Quintero’s death was caused by Covid-19. However, the family did not accept him and decided to take the body without authorization; in order to evade the protocols established in the country for the burial of people who have died of the disease, whose bodies must be wrapped.

“No one can die, because straight away they say it’s because of Covid. Please, you are already good with so much injustice. Do you think a relative of one is handed over rotten, wrapped in a sack and not given a Christian burial? Said Rosa Quintero, the daughter of the deceased.

Relatives moved the body of the deceased for seven blocks to the main street of Fundación. Later, according to the newspaper El Heraldo, the police convinced them to take him to the morgue.

Then, in statements to the Barranquilla newspaper, they apologized and clarified that the reaction was motivated by the powerlessness not to be able to give him a Christian burial. “I apologize to the municipality, we are not vandals, but as the poor we must act so that they listen to us”, added, more serenely, the eldest daughter of the deceased.

The hospital issued a statement rejecting the acts of vandalism and explaining that the incident occurred when relatives of the deceased objected to the institution transferring the body to the warehouse, in accordance with protocol. Covid-19.

“The patient died in our establishment and was transferred respecting all the protocols established in the establishment for the treatment of the corpses until their temporary deposit, a process which was not accepted by the relatives, who acted violently, “he reported in his twitter account.

Covid-19 in Colombia

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection reported, this Friday, April 9, 12,125 new cases of Covid-19 in Colombia. In the last 24 hours, 65,084 tests have been processed, including 38,553 PCRs and 26,531 antigens.

The report also states that 269 Colombians have died from the disease in the past 24 hours. In this way, the country has reached a total of 65,283 deaths since the virus reached the national territory.

When all the figures are put together, Colombia has reached 2,504,206 infected, including 64,784 active cases and 2,365,566 positive cases who have already managed to overcome the disease.

Regarding the regions with the most reported cases, Antioquia leads the infections with 3,101 cases; Bogotá follows with 2796 and Barranquilla appears in third place with 2.030.
