Mexico: alert for the theft of a radioactive source

In a press release, the National Commission for Nuclear Safety and Safeguard (CNSNS) and the National Civil Protection Coordination launched the alert for theft of industrial radiography equipment of the brand QSA GLOBAL, model DELTA 880, with serial number D12791, property of the company Garantia de Calidad SA de CV.

The radioactive source was violently stolen with a Toyota Hilux pickup., model 2016 and with license plate number NRU3128, on the road at the entrance to the municipality of Teoloyucan, State of Mexico.

The source has an approximate weight of 25 kilograms, a height of 22.9 centimeters, a width of 33.8 centimeters and a length of 19.1 centimeters.

“If the radioactive source is removed from its container, handled, or comes in direct contact with it for a few minutes to hours, it can cause permanent injury. If you stay in direct contact with the source for hours or days, its effects can be fatal.”, It is noted in the document.

For the above, coordination of local and federal authorities to implement research and population protection protocols in surrounding areas where the source could be located.

CNPC stressed that if the source is located, the equipment should not be handled, nor remain nearby.. Instead, a security perimeter and guard with a minimum radius of 30 meters must be established, while the finding is notified to the federal law enforcement authority.

A register of people, both civilians and first responders who may have been in the security perimeter, should also be kept, with name, address and contact telephone number.
