Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó joined a protest on Sunday calling for a vaccination plan for the Caribbean country overseen by international organizations. The opposition leader joined a rally in Caracas attended by several former MPs and in which they also demanded that vaccines entering the country be distributed transparently, according to an opposition statement. .

“The vaccine, today, saves lives and prevents discrimination, but the vaccine for the dictatorship to be free and to live with dignity is in the streets, united, demanding, mobilizing” he said to the participants with a megaphone.

Further, he argued that “It is the duty of every citizen to exercise their right to liberty. Freedom is exercised together in the face of a dictatorship ”.

Venezuela received this Saturday a new batch of 80,000 Sputnik V vaccines against covid-19, in addition to the 300,000 doses already received of this drug and 500,000 from Chinese Sinopharm in a country of approximately 30 million inhabitants .

So far, the inoculation of the vaccines has attracted much criticism among health workers, many of whom say they have not received any doses. In addition, the regime has not made public the number of vaccines already applied.

Seven national academies, including that of medicine, also demanded this Saturday that there be rapid and universal access “and without discrimination” to vaccines. against covid-19 in Venezuela. They also called for a vaccination plan to be developed “in a transparent manner” with the participation of experts and subject to constant monitoring, in accordance with international protocols and standards established by the World Health Organization (WHO) “.

In a joint declaration, they call for an “emergency vaccination campaign to be launched which covers at least 70% of the population during the emergency period” and offer “their experience and knowledge” to contribute to this initiative. The document is signed by the academies of medicine; physical, mathematical and natural sciences; economics; Engineering and habitat; Political and social sciences; history and language.

They also ask to take into consideration the parameters of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the human rights bodies of the United Nations and the Organization of American States (OAS).. They also consider that “the best strategies” to fight the pandemic are prevention and mass vaccination.

However, they point out that Venezuela is among the Latin American countries that have vaccinated the smallest percentage of its population and, therefore, there is a need to speed up the process in the country.
