Chile lifted quarantine in Santiago and extended border closure for another 30 days

Chile has lifted the quarantine in the metropolitan region of Santiago de Chile and other cities in the country, and extended the closure of its borders for another 30 days with the aim of reducing coronavirus infections.

In total, 26 Chilean municipalities will be released from imprisonment from next Thursday, 10 of them from the metropolitan region of Santiago, Alhué, Melipilla, Independencia, Las Condes, Talagante, Vitacura, Lo Barnechea, Providencia, La Reina and Ñunoa, and another 16 from different parts of the country.

Specific, These municipalities will go to the so-called phase 2 of de-escalation, which however includes restrictions, since containment is maintained for the weekend, the operation of gymnasiums and other sporting activities in closed spaces is prohibited, casinos are still banned and the capacity of shopping centers is reduced, among others, as explained on Monday by the Under-Secretary for Public Health, Paula Daza.

“The health situation shows some very slight signs of improvement and some municipalities will present changes (…) However, we have decided that the transition will be stricter at certain levels”, declared the Minister of Health, Enrique Paris , reports The third.

On another side, Paris announced that the border closure – imposed at the end of March – is maintained for an additional 30 days to prevent the entry of new variants of COVID-19.

Daza recalled that Chileans will only be able to leave the country in “exceptional cases”, it will be the same for foreigners interested in entering Chilean territory, for whom a PCR test and compulsory isolation are required.

Chile added 6,078 coronavirus cases on Monday, for a total of 1,175,614 confirmed positives since the outbreak of the pandemic, including 42,195 active cases.

COVID-19 killed 25,975, 119 on the last day, while patients who managed to recover reached 1,106,862, according to the latest health ministry report.

On another side, 3,363 people affected by the disease are in intensive care units, while there are 217 beds available.
