Pepe Mujica was rushed to hospital for a thorn stuck in his esophagus

Mujica’s personal doctor, Raquel Pannone, assured during a dialogue with the Uruguayan newspaper El País that it was a “minor intervention” and that “tomorrow she would be back home”.

The doctors first tried to remove the spine without anesthesia, with an outpatient procedure, but because it was impossible to do so, they decided to operate. Relatives of the 85-year-old former president said he is in a good mood.

Mujica, one of the main leaders of the left Frente Amplio (FA) and who became president (2010-2015) is one of the most popular and at the same time the most resistant politicians in Uruguay due to his past as guerrillas and in his government he had a huge international projection.

His style far from protocol and his speeches focused on human values ​​unusual in political language have made him a sought-after figure by media around the world. In October 2020, he left his seat in the Senate, but assured that this did not mean abandoning politics but rather that of the “first rank”.
