“Don’t hate her for being pretty”: Lilly Téllez and Estefanía Veloz spark controversy over Mexico’s triumph at Miss Universe

Last Sunday night, Andrea Meza won the third Miss Universe crown for Mexico. An achievement that has been recognized on a large scale, since this title had not set foot in the country for almost 11 years old.

Of course, with her victory, the controversial beauty pageant debate resurfaced as well. One of the debaters was the lawyer Stephanie Veloz who first published in Twitter.

“Since they are so excited because a Mexican woman is Miss Universe, I remind them that they kill 10 Mexican women EVERY DAY.”, he asserted.

This generated several cross opinions, one of which came from a user who quizzed in derision: “Do you think it’s a contest based on the beauty standards imposed by men and not on the ‘alternative’ beauty that feminism promotes? And kiss his mother the PG ”.

Given this, the feminist also responded: “Yes, those beauty standards are part of the problem.”

And is that in recent years, beauty pageants have been the target of various debates where they are reported as perpetuators of beauty standards that feminist organizations have struggled to eradicate.

However, Andrea Meza posted an emotional post after her coronation as Miss Universe, in which she ensured that beauty lies in the mind, soul and values ​​of each; a speech very similar to the one he defended in the competition.

“For me, beauty is in our mind, in our soul and in the values ​​with which we behave. Never allow someone to tell you that you are worthless ”, expressed on his Twitter account.

Also, a few minutes before being titled as the most beautiful “in the universe”, she added: “We live in an increasingly advanced society. And just as we have progressed as a society, we have also progressed in stereotypes. Nowadays, beauty is not just in how we look ”.

With this victory, 26, from Chihuahua, becomes third Mexican to win in the iconic international contest, being Lupita Jones, in 1991, and Ximena Navarrete, in 2010, her predecessors by winning the contest.

In one of the stages of the competition, the young woman was asked about a way to protect people amid the COVID-19 pandemic to which she replied that before it all happened, she would have quarantined everyone, “because we have lost so many lives and we cannot lose more because of it. “

In a second chance to captivate the judges and the world with her opinion, Andrea Meza spoke about stereotypes: “We live in an increasingly advanced society and just as we have progressed as a society, we have also progressed in stereotypes. Beauty today is not only in the way we see ourselves, for me beauty is in the soul, in the spirit and in values. Never allow someone to tell you that you are worthless. “
