Man jumped into pond and fought alligator to save his dog

A man and his dog recover afterwards a confrontation with an alligator which almost killed the dog.

The attack occurred last Tuesday morning while Mike McCoy was walking his dog with a friend in Holiday County, Florida, United States. Out of nowhere, an alligator came out of a pond and grabbed her eight month old dog, an 8 month old chocolate lab named Jake.

According to McCoy the “death cry” his pet gave alerted him to the attack, and without thinking too much, his instinct led him to the pond where the alligator was to save his dog.

McCoy said he knew he had to act fast once he realized the alligator had his dog. The entire ordeal, he said, only lasted a few minutes.

The 62-year-old said he hadn’t even thought twice before tackling the alligator.

“Without thinking twice. You can’t. You don’t have time”, He said. “It’s a parental instinct. But I’m glad I got it because I wouldn’t have it. “

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials confirmed they were contacted by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office at around 8:30 a.m. on May 11 regarding an alligator bite incident. They said they would coordinate with a hired a “nuisance crocodile” hunter.

This Thursday, the hunter caught the animal, according to local media.

McCoy was happy that the alligator had been caught because of its proximity to a school.

“I think they put us there for a reason,” He said. “So maybe God wanted me there with him, the problem is solved?”

McCoy is happy that he and his dog are doing well.

“We could have done a lot worse. I mean I have no tendon damage [o] Broken bones “, He said. “He doesn’t have any fractures or punctures in his vital organs.”
