Seven prisoners died beheaded on Wednesday in a prison in the Guatemalan city of Quetzaltenango, 200 kilometers west of the Guatemalan capital.

The massacre took place in one of the prison’s courtyards, where 2,252 prisoners live in a state of overcrowding, more than 200% above the capacity of the place, according to local media.

Authorities regained control of the prison in the early hours of Thursday and transferred 77 prisoners to other prisons while continuing to investigate what had happened.

The prosecution carried out an expertise at the crime scene where the prisoners were beheaded, who according to local media were tortured before being murdered.

One of the hypotheses is that the massacre took place after the crime against the wife of one of the persons deprived of liberty.
