Jorge Larrañaga, Minister of the Interior of Uruguay, has died

The Minister of the Interior and leader of the White National Alliance, Jorge Larrañaga, died this Saturday at the age of 64, of a heart attack.

President Luis Lacalle Pou confirmed the news on his Twitter account. “Jorge Larrañaga has passed away. Very difficult! I learned to love and respect him. He loved even in the harshness of the battle. We compete, we cooperate, we respect each other. He was at his peak. RIP, ”he wrote.

Jorge Larrañaga served between 1990 and 1999 as mayor of Paysandú, department in which you were born. He was also senator of the Republic and candidate of the National Party for the presidency in 2004. In the elections of 2009, he was candidate for the vice-presidency of Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera and returned to occupy the presidential formula as vice of Lacalle Pou in the 2014 Elections, the triumph of the current president in 2019, Larrañaga was appointed Minister of the Interior, a position he held from March 1, 2020 until today.

In his speech in the executive tower, he stressed that the priorities would be to support the police, the fight against drug trafficking, a change in prisons and the recovery of public spaces.
