Juan Guaidó congratulated the new President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, on the day of his inauguration, and stressed the importance of his coming to power for the Venezuelan cause.

“We will work together to defend democracy in the region, we know your commitment to Venezuela and to freedom”, said the Venezuelan interim president on his social networks.

“We congratulate President Lasso on his inauguration, we wish him a successful administration. We appreciate your invitation to accompany him, ”added the Leader of the Opposition.

The vast majority of Venezuelan migrants who arrive in Ecuador have this Andean country as their final destination, according to the 10th Venezuelan population flow monitoring survey.

“96% say their migratory route ends in Ecuador; while two percent will continue to Peru, one percent to Chile, one percent to other countries and less than one percent will return to Venezuela, ”said a statement from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The report, for the months of February and March of this year, has for some time reaffirmed the trend that Ecuador seems increasingly attractive to migrants, since it was mainly a transit country, at least it seemed so according to official data.

Due to the more than 1.7 million Venezuelans who have crossed Ecuadorian borders in recent years, the vast majority were on their way to Peru and Chile, and only about 400,000 remained in the country according to official Ecuadorian statistics which, unofficially, are raised up to 600,000 by some organizations.

For his part, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis AlmagroHe also welcomed Lasso’s inauguration as Ecuador’s new president on Monday, and said he had the full support of this body to continue to advance in favor of democracy and human rights. .

At 65, Lasso replaced outgoing president Lenín Moreno, and in his inauguration speech, he promised to build a country of “reunion”, far from the political hatred of the past, open to the world and national unity between all sectors of society.

“In this government that was born today, from the new century of republicanism (in Ecuador), the era of the caudillos ends … The era of the caudillos ends!”, Proclaimed Lasso after assuring that ” he will rule for all. “

Lasso assumed the presidency of Ecuador after defeating correísmo and regain power for the right after two decades.

The 65-year-old former banker inherits an economic crisis that has spread to society and health due to COVID-19, with Ecuador being the seventh in Latin America with the most cases (418,851) and death (20,193).

“Those who seek all power end up asking for mercy for the crimes that occur when that power gets out of hand.” For this reason, he assured that his government will remain faithful to the margins imposed by the laws.

Regarding the role of government, he clarified: “Our intention is not to minimize the state, but to maximize its ability to serve the poorest.”

Then he asked to join all efforts to continue and expand the COVID-19 vaccination campaign, including hospitals and private companies. “We will respond on several fronts to maximize the solutions that reduce the virus. It will be the largest logistics deployment in our history, ”he said. In this sense, he reiterated his pledge to vaccinate 9 million Ecuadorians in the first 100 days of government.

For his part, Lasso opened Ecuador to global free trade and proposed to find the “democratic soul” of the country after 14 years of struggle around the former socialist president Rafael Correa. “Today Ecuador declares that it is opening its doors to world trade”He spoke in a speech after his inauguration in the unicameral Parliament, specifying that he will seek to enter “as soon as possible” in the oil country of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru) as as a “full partner”.

“We will open Ecuador to free trade agreements with our greatest allies,” he said.

“We have started the fight to regain the democratic soul of our country,” said the former right-wing banker, declaring that “The political persecution in Ecuador is over”, a badly attributed to the correísmo.

“I have not come to satisfy the hatred of a few, I have come to satisfy the hunger of many,” said the new leader.
