Millions of mice have invaded schools, homes and hospitals in New South Wales and Queensland, in the east of the country, wreaking havoc and leaving entire towns suffocated by a lingering, pungent odor.

Mice have now been seen eating the remains of dead rodents and there are even predictions that they could reach Sydney in a matter of weeks, aboard freight trucks and crates of food.

While the Australian Veterinary Drugs and Pesticides Authority did not approve the use of a highly toxic chemical to control the plague, the state of New South Wales is already preparing to obtain the permit.

Local authorities have obtained 5,000 liters of bromadiolone, one of the most potent mouse poisons, which will be distributed to 20 treatment sites in the most affected areas of the region.

Losses

The pest is also threatening Australia’s $ 51 billion agricultural industry. The number of mice has skyrocketed after a bumper harvest last season. Since the crisis shows no sign of abating, some farmers refrain from planting winter crops for fear that rodents could damage freshly sown seeds and ripe grains, according to Matthew Madden, chairman of the grain committee of the NSW Farmers industry group.
