Step by step: it was the cowardly murder of Alma Barragán, MC candidate in Moroleón

May 26, 2021. Moroleón, Guanajuato. In this place no one remembers anything and who tries to forget. Just a few hours ago, a group of armed men spread terror.

The scene – so daily in a Mexico during the elections – took place in the Colonia La Manguita, of the municipality of Moroleón. The objective of the attack: to annihilate the candidate for the municipal presidency by Citizen movement (MC), Alma barragan.

The applicant, from a small neighboring town in the State of Michoacan, was shot dead on Tuesday afternoon, when armed individuals in two vehicles and several motorcycles pulled up in front of the Pedro Guzmán Street, where a proselytizing event took place in Barragán.

The men shot the competitor and fled. Barragán’s body was left next to his truck, where he allegedly protected himself from bullets.

State investigative agents, experts and prosecution personnel visited the site to carry out the initial investigations. The Guanajuato state attorney general has opened an investigation into the homicide, but the causes are unknown.

“#FGEG strongly condemns the murder of the candidate of @MovCiudadanoMx to the mayor of Moroleón. The Attorney General has assigned a cell of @AIC_Guanajuato to assist the Special Homicide Unit in the investigation, clarification and detention of the accused, ”FGE Guanajuato posted on its Twitter account.

At 5:50 p.m. – a few minutes before the cunning crime – the candidate invited the residents of La Manguita to listen to her proposals, one of which was to donate her salary to build a children’s shelter.

As happened with the rest of the murdered politicians throughout the electoral process, Barragán’s execution sparked all kinds of backlash and condemnation, mainly by his fellow party members, Citizen movement, but also the rest.

Barragán was a businesswoman from the town of Moreleón, who has already suffered from other acts of political violence. Juan Manuel Guzman, also a candidate for the municipal presidency of the region for the PRI-PRD coalition, was assaulted while driving his truck on Ponciano Vega Boulevard on the border with Michoacán. The applicant was slightly injured.

It’s Wednesday, May 26, early in the morning, a state police patrol is patrolling the area at the last minute.

Election violence

In the current process, 28 candidates have been executed. Although nearly all states have been splashed with violence against candidates, who have also reported attacks on family or team members, geographically the candidate murders are mostly concentrated in State of Mexico, Veracruz, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Michoacán.

By political parties, both the main and the independents suffered losses in their ranks. On May 14, the bullets put an end to the Citizen Movement candidate for mayor of Cajeme, Sonora, Abel Murrieta. As with Barragán, the crime occurred during an electoral event. Last Sunday, Arturo Flores, candidate for the guardianship of Landa de Matamoros, Querétaro, was found dead.
