A total of 24 countries voted in favor of the creation of an international commission with a broad mandate to investigate allegations of human rights violations before and during the latest conflict between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas, it stopped a week ago.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu has said that the UN Human Rights Council’s approval of the international investigation is a “shameful decision.”

The vote on the inquiry “is one more example of the UN Human Rights Council’s clear anti-Israel obsession”, he said in a statement, in which he accused those who approved the investigation of “cover up a genocidal terrorist organization deliberately targeting Israeli civilians while turning Gaza civilians into human shields, ”referring to the Islamist movement Hamas, which has de facto ruled the strip since 2007.

On the other hand, Netanyahu argued that Israel is “a democracy that acts legitimately to protect its citizens from thousands of indiscriminate rocket attacks.” and described the establishment of the commission of inquiry as a “travesty that pokes fun at international law and encourages terrorists around the world.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry also referred to Thursday’s decision, saying “Any resolution which does not condemn the firing of more than 4,300 rockets by a terrorist organization against Israeli civilians, or does not even mention the terrorist organization Hamas, is nothing more than a moral failure and a blemish. on the international community. and the UN ”.

In a statement issued by a spokesperson, The Foreign Ministry stressed that the CHR has “an anti-Israel majority guided by hypocrisy and absurdity” and anticipated that “Israel will not cooperate with this investigation.“.

The resolution approved today instructs the new commission – whose members are to be appointed by the chair of the HRC, currently in charge of Fiji – that Investigate what has happened not since May 6, considered the start of the clashes, but since April 13.

The resolution instructs the commission to be created to record and store all information it finds that can serve as evidence in possible legal proceedings, to identify those responsible for the violations and to recommend measures that could be used to bring justice.
