The light phenomenon on Mount Merapi was recorded by security cameras and a local photographer who was in the area.

The moment when a meteor suddenly lights up the Indonesian sky just above the Merapi volcano, considered the most active in the archipelago, was captured this week and its images have gone viral on the web.

Video recorded by security cameras on May 27 shows a flash of light that pierces the atmosphere land on the mountain before apparently crashing very close to the top. Although these images are somewhat blurry, this is not the only proof of the curious phenomenon.

Local photographer Gunarto Song, who has been photographing the volcano on the island of Java for a few months, was in the area and managed to take a few pictures, which he then shared on his Instagram account.

The shots, taken at night from the town of Batu Alien, show a slightly greenish light that appears to fall directly into the crater. “Suddenly there was a ray of bright light as if falling from above on the top of the volcano Merapi. It was super bright and fast. This is an authentic photograph. I took a four second exposure, ”the man told local media.

In January of this year, the volcano released a large column of ash and a river of lava that flowed down its slope. The last major eruption of Mount Merapi, 2,900 meters high, which took place in 2010, caused the death of 347 people.
