Intellectuals and former Chavista leaders supported the Accord of National Salvation proposed by Juan Guaidó for Venezuela

More than 20 politicians linked to the left in Venezuela this Sunday supported the national salvation agreement proposed weeks ago by Juan Guaidó, which paved the way for free elections in exchange for the lifting of sanctions against personalities of the regime of Nicolás Maduro.

The agreement was proposed by Guaidó weeks ago, framed by the need for “democratic guarantees for all actors: democratic forces, on the one hand, and Chavismo too”, and includes the “Massive” influx of humanitarian aid and vaccines against the coronavirus.

The possible agreements to alleviate and contain the suffering of our people do not wait any longer. We need a lifelong pact for the anti-covid vaccines that immunize 20 million Venezuelans enter the country without any political delay and are distributed in a plan that prioritizes the most vulnerable populations. Hunger, misery, unemployment deserve priority treatment, as well as the forced migration of millions of Venezuelans.

We are urged to save the democracy violated and hijacked by a political elite that has lost the dream of a great just and egalitarian country that the popular majorities entrusted to them at the beginning of the 21st century. You cannot continue to rule with your back to the people, imposing an autocratic government that refuses to recognize the voice of the Venezuelan nation calling for political change. It must be agreed within the framework of the Constitution to be peaceful, civilized and electoral. The people must decide with their vote, in free and verifiable elections, the political controversy and the fate of our country.

We argue that this attempted conversation between the ruling autocracy and the democratic opposition has a full and transparent program with the society of the international community. Only in this way will we avoid the delay that the government of Nicolás Maduro uses skillfully and bring us closer to credible and binding agreements that civil society can decisively support.

This dialogue can no longer be the same. There is a set of humanitarian and democratic guarantees that the government is required to restore immediately with the support of the international community and the mobilized Venezuelan people. This will allow us to meet the urgent demands of our people for immunizations, food, medicine and to overcome the international isolation of our country. Partisan democratic forces and civil society will not allow time to waste due to autocratic delaying tactics.

Putting aside any skepticism or apprehension about the behavior and interests of the ruling elite, we come to reaffirm the need to shine a light on the dark path of the Venezuelan present. Venezuela deserves another destiny, another life, a new democratic coexistence, restoring the growth and well-being of our families, living in peace.
