In accordance with what was said this Monday before the Chinese Communist Party Assembly, Xi Jinping he puts order in the regime’s narrative. That is why he ordered an end to a narrative that causes headaches in Beijing: Tian’anmen.
the Hong Kong June 4th Museum, dedicated to the memory of the massacre of Tian’anmen the 1989 and Beijing, was closed on Tuesday, three days after it reopened, for alleged problems with licenses, center officials reported today.
The Hong Kong Alliance to Support Democratic Patriotic Movements in China (HKA, in its acronym in English), director of the museum, detailed today in a press release that this Tuesday the center received an unprecedented visit from officials of the food and environmental hygiene department, who alleged that the museum did not have the proper license to operate.
Thus, the directors of the museum decided “that legal advice is needed on this matter“, as good as “temporary closure, until further notice” in order to “protect the safety of employees and visitors“In the middle of a”difficult political situation”.
According to HKA, more than 550 people visited the museum during the three opening days. The HKA announced on Sunday the reopening of it, which over the past 9 years has been forced to close its doors and change seats on several occasions partly due to political pressure, but also due to pandemic problems.
The museum exhibited photographs taken in 1989, banners used in protests and dress accessories by protesters in retaliation, as well as miniature replicas of the Goddess of Democracy, a 10-meter-high statue erected by students from fine arts in front of the portrait of Mao tse tung at Tian’anmen and that it was then run over by tanks.
Also, this year, it hosted a photographic exhibition entitled “The Democratic Movement of 1989 and Hong KongWhich shows footage of the massive vigils from June 4 to Hong Kong, banned both this year and the previous one under the pretext of the pandemic situation in the city.
There was also a section in which flowers could be placed to remember the deceased, of which there is no official record after 32 years of these events.
Given the sensitivity of the subject – anything related to the tiananmen massacre is heavily censored by Beijing– the life of the museum has been threatened on several occasions.
The protests began in mid-April 1989 following the mourning of the former secretary general of the Chinese Communist Party Hu Yaobang, a representative of the Openness Wing, and the participants were first and foremost university students calling for political reforms and an end to the corruption sparked with economic openness that began in the previous decade.
The repression of these demonstrations, which gradually reached the workers and even the Chinese officials, and which ended up calling for the democratization of the regime, left an as yet unknown number of demonstrators dead at the hands of the Army, whose troops have been killed. also caused several victims.
