A concussion for a lion with skin cancer fighting for life | Chronic

A 16-year-old lion received radiation therapy at a South African hospital after health professionals discovered that the animal had cancer on his nose. As there are no facilities to raise animals of this size, a medical team had to improvise a custom room. The feline should continue treatment.

The 300 kg animal was followed by five radiation therapists and an oncologist who improvised a custom room at the Muelmed Mediclinic Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa. The animal must have been treated for an intense burn in the nose area.

The mammal, nicknamed as ChaosHe was placed on a special stretcher and, before being operated on, he was asleep, tied up and left unconscious to perform the tests with greater safety and to avoid scare other patients who lived in the room.

One of the specialists, Hanri Reynolds, he said: "The animal was accompanied at all times and we collected all the necessary permits to treat it." The process was conducted with the utmost caution. The lion entered the facility while there was no human patient nearby and accessible through the back door.

Meanwhile, caregiver Kara Heynis said: "Even though the treatment is very expensive, all worth it, this animal is a son for all workers, they will do all that is necessary to be healthy." The lion must receive monthly treatment to continue the radiological process.
