A dead man won the elections in a city of Ecuador

In a small town in the province of Guayas, Ecuador, candidate Juan Gonzabay won the elections to preside over the Parish Council of the Progreso population, but the issue became controversial because of the candidate he died in mid-January.

On Tuesday, after counting 100% of the vote, the results were favorable to Gonzabay, 59, who died as a result of heart failure. The problem is that after his death, his political group he did not inform him in time to the electoral authorities, for what has been included in the official ballot.

According to the results, Gonzabay, of the social law party Cristiano-Madera de Guerrero, received 23.44% votes, enough to win the elections. Ecuadorians went to the polls on Sunday to renew their governorship and other political positions.

The choice opened a debate in the electoral delegation of Guayas, where it is badyzed whether the replacement of the candidate or the second most voted candidate should take office.

The law stipulates that if a candidate dies before the election, the party representing him may nominate a substitute, but do not detail the steps to follow in this type of case.
