A freighter dropped 2,000 containers in the sea

A freighter lost nearly 2,000 containers after capsizing overboard in a high seas storm en route to Japan in what is believed to be the largest weather-related pressure drop in history.

The ONE Apus arrived at the port of Kobe, Japan on Tuesday after an eight-day voyage in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Currently a full safety inspection is underway to discover the full extent of the damage.

The storm hit in the middle of the pacific ocean and the containers were lost 1,600 nautical miles northwest of Hawaii.

The pressure drop is believed to be the largest weather-related pressure drop in history. Among what remained at sea were 64 containers of dangerous goods, 54 with fireworks, eight with batteries and two with liquid ethanol.

The ship would have faced 52-foot waves (about 16 meters) during your trip and a “high and long swell”.

“The ship’s operating equipment, loading equipment and propulsion machinery are in good repair and the officers and sailors are highly motivated, experienced, loyal and well-trained seafarers.” said the owners and managers of the vessel.
