After the events, Cherry Lew Yee Lee, a Facebook user who took part in the rescue, revealed in a post that she adopted the puppy and named him Saru, a word which means “monkey” in Japanese. He was analyzed by a vet and although he had some minor injuries and swelling in his head, he was in good condition.
“The monkey didn’t seem to hurt him, he just held the little one while he moved. He seemed to treat him like a friend or his baby,” said the young woman, interviewed by Daily Mail.
Locals say the monkey was part of a group known to steal food from their homes and have expressed concern that they are now taking pets. The rescued puppy was reportedly pulled from a stray litter box.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian government receives an average of 3,800 complaints about monkeys across the country each year, which has led to the establishment of a mass slaughter program for these animals. It is known that up to 70,000 macaques were killed each year between 2013 and 2016.
