A new island has appeared off San Isidro

A new island has appeared in the Río de la Plata, off the municipality of Buenos Aires de San Isidro. It is the third of these formations that forms in this part of the river, and will be declared a Nature Reserve and annexed to the municipal park of Ribera Norte like the two previous ones.

As reported by the Municipality of San Isidro, the Isla It was born from changes in the sedimentation of the Río de la Plata, at the confluence of the San Antonio and Luján canals. Due to the acceleration of this phenomenon, it is estimated that other islands will appear off the coast of the district.

“Today the new island is a sandbank and reeds, although, as happened with its neighbors, other plant species will soon start to grow, trees like willow (typical of delta) until they become mainland and become an island, ”the statement says.

“We continue to add territory to the water, shaping what will be the San Isidro Delta in the future,” said San Isidro Mayor Gustavo Posse. In 2018, by decree and municipal ordinance, the new islands that emerged at that time were declared Strict Nature Reserves, and in 2018, the provincial law was enacted.

According to Posse, “by this measure, the municipality protects the environmental ecosystems and the terrestrial and aquatic habitats of the district, avoids real estate speculation and clearly establishes what cannot be done in these spaces”.

Bárbara Gasparri, director of ecology and biodiversity conservation of San Isidro, said that the process of formation of these islands “occurs naturally due to the precipitation of sediments brought by the Río de la Plata, which come from mainly from northwest Argentina. ” And he assured that “the islands of San Isidro are developing and new ones will be continuously incorporated that will gain surface.”
