A new variant of the coronavirus detected in Tunisia

The director of the Institute, Hechmi Louzir, stressed to the ANSA news agency that “this new strain was detected in the second week of February and is unique in Tunisia, but it has some similarities with the British and South African strains ”.

The process of continuous genetic sequencing according to the standards and recommendations in force, and the results of preliminary research on this modification “have not yet demonstrated any specific risk either at the symptomatic level or at the rate of propagation of the virus”, specified the expert. .

For his part, the director general of the Ministry of Health, Faisal Ben Salah, clarified that the initial data and the results of this genetic mutation they are reassuring in terms of the speed of spread and the speed of the disease. The director also indicated that the ministry’s services are currently focusing on the investigation and genetic sequencing of the samples.

Tunisia, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health, registered 226,740 confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic coronavirus.
