Scientists have discovered a new variant of the coronavirus in the south of the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is the municipality of Porto Real next to the São Paulo border.
“So far, we can not say that it is more deadly or transmissible,” confirmed the Ministry of Health.
The predominant strain in this condition is always the P1 O “Manaus strain“. The variant P1 had appeared in the Amazon region and spread throughout Brazil and other countries including Argentina.
In the region of San Pablo, 19 cases of strain P5. It is not yet known whether these are indigenous cases or whether they are from Rio.

The identification of this new variant has been entrusted to the Corona-Omica-RJ network, which carries out genomic monitoring and in which, among others, professionals from the Fiocruz Institute, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the Getulio Vargas Foundation.
