Honduran priest Rolando Peña has publicly bragged about not wearing a chin strap.

A priest in northwestern Honduras had to come out to apologize after removing the masks from at least two parishioners on Sunday because he considers their use to be “bullshit”.

The event occurred amid the commemoration of the Palm Sunday, in the municipality of Corquín, department of Copán. The controversial moment was recorded by the TV channel Copan On, and some of the footage was broadcast by local media and provoked strong reactions against him on social media.

“Let’s not lose our culture, our religion. Look, I’m looking at all this bullshit, go ahead… ”said the priest, tearing off a woman’s mask. “Shit, go ahead,” he exclaimed, then threw off the mask.

In the pictures, we also observe that another assistant takes off the chin strap saying that “this is a business” and it will not allow those who wear masks to enter the mass.

The priest has been identified as Rolando Peña, 60 years old. Dressed in a red chasuble – as required by the liturgical calendar of Holy Week – boasted of walking without any protection despite the covid-19 pandemic.

“Look how I walk, come on… Take it off, let’s go free, let’s find out,” he said. “Death is going to come to us anyway, this bullshit is not going to deal with death,” Peña said. “I will not leave here until the masks are removed,” he insisted. So you can see how many people present have removed their masks.

This Monday, interviewed by the channel HCH, the priest Peña justified his attitude by his way of being “ and said he was joking.

“We have to trust God. This bullshit [la mascarilla]I use it, but it will not save me from cancer, anemia or any other illness. People misunderstand what I am saying, ”he said.

“If someone has been affected, I apologize, but it’s my way of being,” he insisted.

Darwin Andino, bishop of the Western Diocese, to which the temple of Corquín belongs, clarified that the priest “Has no authority” to force parishioners to violate security measures decreed by the authorities.

“If he doesn’t want to wear the mask, let him not use it, but people have to use it because there is contagionThe bishop added in statements to local media.

For Easter, the Honduran Church suspended processions for fear of contagion and summoned parishioners with biosecurity measures and physical distances to temples.

With around ten million inhabitants, the Central American country has more than 187,000 cases of covid-19 and 4,600 deaths.

Travel restriction

The government of Honduras on Monday restricted the entry into the country of people who have stayed for the past two weeks in South America, UK and South Africa, after cases of the Brazilian variant of the novel coronavirus were detected in Panama and other countries in Latin America.

“Temporarily, the measure to restrict entry into the country, by any means and transport, to non-resident citizens or tourists from the United Kingdom and South Africa is continuing, extending this measure to citizens who have remained in South America for the past 15 days, “authorities said

The health agency also said the “strict” measure is maintained that all travelers entering the country must present a negative PCR test and if they have already been vaccinated, they must prove the inoculation.

The Ministry of Health urged the population to comply “strictly” with biosecurity measures because the new variant is “more contagious and up to twice as transmissible” than those known so far.
