Norwegian health authorities have expressed concerns about rare disease that affects pets and can be fatal Among the animals. According to the Veterinary Institute of this country, about 200 dogs could be affected and it is advisable for owners to avoid dog-to-dog contact.

In five cases, the presence of two bacteria – clostridium perfringens and providencia alkalifaciens – was found in "abnormally high amount," added Haukaas.

The disease has been reported around Oslo, but some cases have also been reported in the rest of the country. Health authorities urged dogs to be leashed and to limit contact with each other to avoid contagion.

Many people have chosen not to take their dogs to public places. For the moment, there is no indication that this disease is transmitted to other animals or to humans.
