The babies, Kristina and Valentina Tambolas are doing well, even though they will still have to undergo minor procedures before being released.
Fourteen doctors, including seven surgeons, participated in the surgery on Saturday. In total, the operation lasted 15 hours
The pups, now four months old, were born prematurely at 33 weeks, and the doctors fought for six weeks to keep them alive before deciding to operate.
"They had a double transfusion syndrome", that is to say problems of blood circulation and cardiac and renal function, explained Dr. Ruza Grizelj.
One of the girls, whose blood circulation was compromised, suffered from hypotension and could not urinate, while the other, overloaded, was suffering from hypertension and that his kidneys and his heart were exposed to excessive work.
The doctors they had to separate the thorax from the twins in two, as well as the liver and intestines. From the duodenum to the end of the small intestine.
The hepatologist Danko Mikulic admitted that before the operation, his team was "very worried" because she did not know how would develop the "circulation between the two parts of the liver".
The question was to make sure that, contrary to the abnormal state until then, the first of the twins left without problems of "work" for the other (pumping for the circulation, the heart, the kidneys), and that this last "takes on his own duties on his own"he says
Another premise of the delicate surgical procedure was to minimize blood loss so as not to aggravate the delicate condition of the girls who, at the time of the operation, were barely weighing 4,500 grams in between.
"Everything happened in the best way possible," Mikulic concluded.
