A southern California woman who was captured by a surveillance camera in April after throwing a bag of newborn puppies in the trash was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty.

Deborah Culwell was sentenced Wednesday to 365 days in a county jail, which had been reduced by 174 days by the time she was already served.

The 59-year-old woman has admitted her guilt in the charges of cruelty and abandonment of animals after pleading for the first time innocent, reported the newspaper Desert Sun.

Prosecutors said Culwell had thrown a plastic bag containing puppies the size of a three-day old palm in a trash bin. They were abandoned by an overwhelming heat before a man heard their tears and saved them.

Puppies, which are supposed to be Terrier mixes, have been treated for dehydration, but one of them is dead.

Another 38 dogs were rescued from Culwell's home in Coachella, east of Los Angeles.
