A young woman asked for an Uber, got into the wrong car and a man killed her

Hundreds of mourners filled a temple in New Jersey at the funeral of a university student who, according to authorities, was reportedly kidnapped and killed in South Carolina after riding in the wrong car .

The funeral of Samantha Josephson took place Wednesday in the Beth Chaim congregation in West Windsor. Josephson, 21, was originally from the nearby town of Robbinsville and had attended the University of South Carolina.

Josephson requested a service to Uber early Friday and mistakenly entered a similar car driven by Nathaniel David Rowland, 24, authorities said, claiming he had killed Josephson and had thrown out his body.

Josephson had spent the night with friends in the Five Points District of Columbia, authorities said. She separated from the group and called Uber to take her home around 1:30 am on Friday morning.

After Josephson boarded Rowland's car, he attacked her, causing several injuries to her head, neck, face, torso, legs and feet, according to the arrest warrant. and the coroner's report. The documents do not specify what was the object with which he attacked it.

Josephson's body was found in Clarendon County, about 105 kilometers from Columbia, police said.

Rowland did not appear in court when he was first subpoenaed and the records do not indicate whether he has a lawyer who can comment on his legal situation. He is accused of kidnapping and murder.

Following the death of Josephson, a bill submitted to the South Carolina legislature will require that Uber and Lyft drivers be provided with light panels.
