Thousands of people marched Saturday in Venice to demand the ban of cruise ships entering the lagoon of the Italian city.

The mobilization was triggered by the shock, six days ago, of a cruise ship against a much smaller ship on the Giudecca Cbad. Five people were injured.

Some protesters carried placards bearing the caption "Outside Lagoon Ships". Others went to the lagoon in small boats.

Environmentalists say the huge countryside is damaging the city's fragile foundations in the Adriatic Sea and is removing the muddy bottom.

The mayor of Venice wants the cruisers to change course. Ships leave thousands of tourists every day in the city.
